There are few things in the world that make me happier than knowing that when I come home a delicious dinner is waiting for me. No I don’t have a personal chef and I didn’t order in. I do, however, have a new best friend- the slow cooker!
If you have never used a slow cooker before it has so many advantages that I hardly know where to begin. It is easy to use, smells delicious all day, makes meat very tender, and you can cook an entire meal in one pot for an easy cleanup. Plus it helps to enhance flavours in dishes such as chilli where the spices tend to taste better once they have spent more time together. Not only do slow cookers have all of these advantages but they are great for making foods which are especially comforting this time of year when the weather gets cold and blustery. I can’t help but be nostalgic about delicious family meals and time spent with loved ones when I come into a home that smells like the comforts of my childhood.
You can cook a variety of meals in a slow cooker from breakfast to dinners. Some of my favourite dishes to make in a slow cooker include chilli, pulled pork, meatballs and ham. Many of the slow cooker brands have come along way since they came into fashion in the 70s and now even have timers and warming features to accommodate busy schedules. Using a slow cooker allows you to plan out your meals beforehand so that you are not worried about what you are going to cook for dinner. This is also more economical in that pre-planning your meals makes you less likely to spend money dining out, and because the cuts used in this method of cooking are inexpensive compared to others. There is also the added benefit of health, slow cookers allow you to control the ingredients and thus the amount of fat and salt added.
