Local food is becoming more and more popular these days, and for good reason! Buying local is sustainable, supports the local economy, local farmers, and allows the consumer to know where their food is coming from. This is why I have decided to write a producer profile to help you better understand where your food is coming from and see the producers who provide high quality products for you and your family.
Teresa Van Raay is a very busy woman – not only is she a pork producer, but she is a Board Director at Ontario Pork Producer’s Marketing Board, Director at Ontario Pork Industry Council, Co-Owner at The Whole Pig and at Van Raay Farms Ltd and the Ontario Pork Representative on Ontario Farming Association (OFA) for PAC. All of this on top of speaking to local community organizations about the pork industry and giving out samples to enthusiastic consumers makes Teresa’s life very exciting.
Teresa and Martin Van Raay have been farming for almost 30 years as western Ontario pork producers on their family farm near Grand Bend, Ontario producing safe and quality products is their number one priority. Their operations are environmentally friendly and certified by the Canadian Quality Assurance code of practice and they work with their animal nutritionist to ensure their animals are fed high quality balanced diets.
In addition to being great farmers, The Van Raays really know how to please their customers. Their business, The Whole Pig, brings flash-frozen pork cuts right to customers’ doors along with recipes, nutritional information and facts about their farm and how they raise pigs. Since launching their company in October 2009, their sales have increased dramatically. The Van Raays feel it is because, today, more people demand to know where their food comes from and want to support local agriculture.
So next time you are in the grocery store, realize all the hard work that goes into the fresh meat and produce. Ask if it is local and support Ontario’s farmers!
